What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a type of restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth. Dental implants are permanent replacements for missing teeth and can greatly improve the health, beauty, and function of your smile. Dental implants are completed through three main steps:
- First, the dental implant is surgically implanted into the jawbone. The implant, which is similar to a screw or post, replaces the root of the missing tooth. During a period of healing, the jawbone will begin to bond with the dental implant, which is often created from titanium.
- Second, an abutment is attached to the dental implant. The abutment is simply an attachment that allows us to place the dental implant restoration.
- Finally, the dental implant restoration is placed, replacing the crown of the missing tooth. Depending on how many teeth are missing, your implant restoration may be a full or partial denture, a dental bridge, or a dental crown.
